Seiko Seed was founded in the fall of 2022 as a hub for exploring new possibilities in watchmaking, inviting visitors to discover the many joys of watches. Our inaugural exhibition, Forest of Mechanisms, welcomed far more visitors than we had ever anticipated, offering them a chance to delve into the intricate workings of watches, experience their captivating mechanics, and witness the technological innovations brought to life by the movements of these delicate machines.
Last year, four creative groups reinterpreted the concept of "Animacy"—the essence of life within a mechanical watch—through their unique perspectives. This allowed visitors to experience the beauty and playfulness that extend beyond the basic function of timekeeping.
The third occasion of this event, Forest of Mechanisms 2024, invites visitors to explore the fundamental elements of a mechanical watch in even greater depth.
Seiko Watch designers, artist Kosei Komatsu, the engineering design group SPLINE DESIGN HUB, and the creative group siro have each contributed their expertise to focus on the core elements of mechanical watches, resulting in a new Forest of Mechanisms. This exhibition blends their collective wisdom, craftsmanship, and creativity. We invite you to enjoy the array of surprises and discoveries and the vibrant pulse of life created through their work.
Born in Japan in 1981, Kosei Komatsu is an artist who began creating works focused on natural physical phenomena as a member of the artist group "Atelier OMOYA" after graduating from the Department of Architecture at Musashino Art University in 2004 and completing his postgraduate studies at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2006. He became an independent artist in 2014.
Starting with an interest in "floating" and "birds," Komatsu currently develops works that focus on "lightness," "movement," and "light." He has exhibited his works in museums and also creates spatial productions in large commercial facilities.
In 2022, he was appointed as a specially appointed associate professor in the Department of Architecture at Musashino Art University.
Established in 2015, siro specializes in a wide range of projects, from planning and design to production, with a particular focus on creating exhibitions. Our core expertise lies in designing engaging experiences. For the Forest of Mechanisms project, we carefully considered the elements needed to enhance the exhibition. To achieve this, we have assembled a dedicated team: Shinya Matsuyama and Takayuki Katagiri from siro, optical design expert Toru Takata, and Hiroaki Watanabe, who excels at creative writing.

They form an elite team of six members, including external collaborators, each with a distinct area of expertise. United by their pursuit of “beautiful movement through robotics,” they bring together a rich tapestry of skills and knowledge. Their team of designers, engineers, artists, and researchers explore new frontiers of creativity, harnessing collective wisdom and amplifying each other’s ideas to uncover unprecedented possibilities.

Through our tireless pursuit of innovation, we will continue to strive to create products of high emotional value that bring trust and inspiration to people and society, and fill the world with smiles.
